Presenter: Jyotikar Mishra (PGT English)
Institution: PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya Mahoba
This presentation outlines the key strategies implemented to foster an immersive English language learning environment in school. The approach aims to enhance students’ language proficiency by integrating English into
various aspects of the school environment, ensuring consistent exposure, and providing engaging learning opportunities.
Key Components:
1. Constant Exposure to English:
English is embedded into everyday interactions, both in and out of the classroom, providing students with continuous language exposure. Visual aids like posters, charts, and labels are prominently used to build vocabulary.
2. Interactive Learning:
The use of interactive activities such as debates, speeches, and group discussions are emphasized to promote active use of English. Role-playing and peer-to-peer interactions help students practice real-life conversations, building confidence and fluency.
3. Technology Integration:
Various language apps and games, including the Diksha app and Quizlet, are incorporated into lessons. Students are encouraged to create podcasts and engage with online resources like videos and audiobooks to enhance listening and speaking skills.
4. Cross-Disciplinary Language Learning:
English is used across subjects such as Mathematics, Science, and Social Science to reinforce language use in different contexts. Writing assignments in non-language subjects help strengthen students’ English skills.
5. Tailoring Support for Different Proficiency Levels:
Small-group instruction and customized assignments are provided to students who need additional support. Parents play an active role by supporting language activities at home, such as making presentations and creating podcasts.
6. Building Confidence and Motivation:
Students’ efforts and progress are recognized with certificates or awards, fostering a positive and motivating learning environment. A growth mindset is cultivated, encouraging students to learn from their mistakes and persevere.
Holistic Approach:
The entire school community, including teachers, students, and parents, is involved in creating a language-rich environment. Teachers collaborate on language-based activities, and community events are conducted in English to promote the social use of the language.
Conclusion:
By consistently exposing students to English, integrating language learning into various subjects, and utilizing technology, the school has created an environment that not only enhances language acquisition but also makes
learning enjoyable. This holistic approach ensures that students gain both proficiency and confidence in their use of English.
